BRICS Sports Games: 82 Countries, 387 Sets of Medals, and a Meeting of Sports Ministers

The BRICS Sports Games were the main sporting event on the calendar of events of Russia’s BRICS Chairship.

The competitions in 27 sports took place at 17 different sports facilities in Kazan on 12–23 June 2024. Delegations from 82 countries participated in the games. A total of 5,460 participants took part in the games, including 2,852 athletes competing for 387 sets of medals. The top three included teams from Russia, Belarus and China.

“Sports cooperation of BRICS countries is being built in the spirit of partnership and remains one of the priority areas of interaction between our states. A key initiative was the development of a framework programme for sports cooperation. It will contain the rules for holding the BRICS Games in the chairing country. Russia took the initiative to develop this programme. The document is designed to become the cornerstone for the development of cooperation and to consolidate the inalienable values of the sports movement,” Russian Minister of Sport Mikhail Degtyarev said.

The BRICS ministers of sport held a meeting as part of the games, which was attended by Mikhail Degtyarev as well as Director of the State General Administration of Sports of China Gao Zhidan, Director-General of the UAE General Authority of Sports Ghanim Mubarak Al Hajeri, Minister of Culture and Sports of Ethiopia Kajela Merdassa, National Secretary of the Ministry of Sports of Brazil Iziane Castro Marques, Director General of the Sports Authority of India Sandip Pradhan, Director General of the International Affairs Department of the Ministry of Sports and Youth of Iran Mohammad Hassan Taghizadeh, and Acting Director General of Sports of South Africa Mncube Simphiwe.

The key outcome of the meeting was the adoption of a joint statement by the BRICS ministers of sport that was coordinated during expert meetings by a BRICS working group held the day before. The statement noted the need to hold joint training, sports events, sports exchanges of coaches and specialists, meetings, and sessions of the joint working group in the periods between meetings of the BRICS ministers.
